Star anise is a spice made from the fruit of the Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum12345. The fruit is picked before it can ripen and is dried until it resembles a hard, nut-brown seed. The star-shaped pods from which the spice seeds are harvested have a flavor that is reminiscent of licorice. Both the seeds and the pod are used in cooking and contain the sweet, potent anise flavor.
